Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Back-formation from միլիոն (milion), as if it contains մի (mi, one).

Pronunciation[edit]

Suffix[edit]

-իլիոն (-ilion) (traditional orthography spelling -իլիոն or -իլիօն)

  1. -illion

Usage notes[edit]

The large numerals formed using native prefixes traditionally follow the long scale. 10⁹, short scale "billion", is expressed as հազար միլիոն (hazar milion, thousand million); 10¹⁵ as հազար երկիլիոն (hazar erkilion, thousand trillion/billion); etc. Nowadays, however, they follow the short scale, serving as calques of the more common Russian-borrowed big numbers, or, in the diaspora, of whatever scale the host country uses.
