Etymology

Unclear. Possibly composed of 古 (*-kwo-, politeness suffix?) + 只 (*-k, emphatic particle) + 賜 (*[i]si-, auxiliary verb showing politeness towards the subject) + 立 (*-sye, imperative suffix). In that case, the Middle Korean 으쇼셔 (-usyosye) may be from *[i]si- + *-kwo- + *-sye, in which the emphatic particle *-k is removed and the suffix *-kwo- is attached on the auxiliary verb.[1][2]
