===Etymology===
Almost certainly an {{etyl|ira|xcl}} borrowing.

Ačaṙyan remarks that {{etyl|pal|-}} {{m|pal|ptwnd|tr=patvand, paywand|gloss=connection, relationship}} fits in form but not meaning. J̌ahukyan is more positive, adducing also {{etyl|fa|-}} {{m|fa|پایوند|tr=pāyvand|gloss=fetter}}, {{etyl|fa|-}} {{m|fa|پای بست|tr=pāy bast|gloss=foundation}}{{attention|fa|spellcheck}}. Compare also Pazend {{etyl|pal|-}} {{m|pal|tr=paēvand|sc=Avst}}, {{etyl|xmn|-}} {{m|xmn|pywn|tr=paywann, paywenn|gloss=connection, tie}}, {{etyl|kho|-}} {{m|kho|tr=pabana-|gloss=continuum, connexion}}. All of these ultimately go back to {{etyl|ira-pro|-}} {{m|ira-pro|*pati-|gloss=against, toward}} + {{m|ira-pro|*band-|gloss=to bind}}.

Old Armenian

Etymology

Almost certainly an (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Lua error in Module:parameters at line 331: Parameter 1 should be a valid language or etymology language code; the value "ira" is not valid. See WT:LOL and WT:LOL/E. borrowing.

Ačaṙyan remarks that (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Persian ptwnd (patvand, paywand, connection, relationship) fits in form but not meaning. J̌ahukyan is more positive, adducing also (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Persian پایوند (pāyvand, fetter), (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Persian پای بست (pāy bast, foundation). Compare also Pazend (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Persian [Avestan needed] (paēvand), (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Manichaean Middle Persian pywn (paywann, paywenn, connection, tie), (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Khotanese [script needed] (pabana-, continuum, connexion). All of these ultimately go back to (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Iranian *pati- (against, toward) + *band- (to bind).
