From Vulgar Latin *singlutiāre, from singultiāre, from Latin singultāre, present active infinitive of singultō, from singultus. The (Vulgar) Latin was altered under the influence of gluttiō, gluttīre (to swallow). Compare Italian singhiozzare, Romansch sanglotter, French sangloter.

This was conjugated like a regular verb, but with a change from -ç- to -c- before front vowels (i and e).
