From Proto-Tai *ɲuŋᴬ (mosquito). Cognate with Thai ยุง (yung), Northern Thai ᨿᩩᨦ (nyung), Lao ຍຸງ (nyung), ᦍᦳᧂ (yung), Shan ယုင်း (yúng), Tai Nüa ᥕᥧᥒᥰ (yüng), Aiton ယုင် (yuṅ), Ahom 𑜐𑜤𑜂𑜫 (ñuṅ), Saek ญุ๊ง, Nong Zhuang nyongz.
