From Middle High German vegeviur, a calque of Ecclesiastical Latin īgnis pūrgātōrius or īgnis pūrgātiōnis (cleansing fire). Analysable as fëge (to polish, clean) +‎ Füür (fire). Cognate with German Fegefeuer.
