From Middle Irish dál, from Proto-Celtic *dâli-, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰwel-, *dʰewel- (to dim, dull, cloud, make obscure, swirl, whirl), see also Latvian dulls (crazy, mad), Lithuanian dvylas (dark, reddish brown).
