From Middle Irish dál, from Proto-Celtic *dâli-, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰwel-, *dʰewel- (“to dim, dull, cloud, make obscure, swirl, whirl”), see also Latvian dulls (“crazy, mad”), Lithuanian dvylas (“dark, reddish brown”).
