Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *put- (small/young animal, bird), cognate with Latvian putns (see there for more) and Old East Slavic пътица (pŭtica), Old Church Slavonic пътица (pŭtica) (< Proto-Slavic *pъtìca). Further potentially related to Sanskrit पोत (pota, the young of an animal) via Proto-Indo-European *peh₂w- (little; young; offspring).
