From Proto-Balto-Slavic *put- (“small/young animal, bird”), cognate with Latvian putns (see there for more) and Old East Slavic пътица (pŭtica), Old Church Slavonic пътица (pŭtica) (< Proto-Slavic *pъtìca). Further potentially related to Sanskrit पोत (pota, “the young of an animal”) via Proto-Indo-European *peh₂w- (“little; young; offspring”).
