From Old Czech šídlo, from Proto-Slavic *šidlo; cognate with Lower Sorbian šydło, Upper Sorbian šidło, Polish szydło, Russian ши́ло (šílo), Serbo-Croatian šilo. Synchronically analyzable as šít +‎ -dlo.
