Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly from a derivation of Vulgar Latin *cochleār, Latin cochlea (“snail”), from Ancient Greek κοχλίας (kokhlías, “spiral, snail shell”). Cognate with Spanish and Portuguese caracol (“snail”) Confer with cullera (“spoon”). Alternatively, possibly of pre-Roman Indo-European origin.
