Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly from a derivation of Vulgar Latin *cochleār, Latin cochlea (snail), from Ancient Greek κοχλίας (kokhlías, spiral, snail shell). Cognate with Spanish and Portuguese caracol (snail) Confer with cullera (spoon). Alternatively, possibly of pre-Roman Indo-European origin.
