From *աշտ (*ašt), from Middle Persian *ašt, from Old Persian *𐎠𐎼𐏁𐎫𐎡 (*a-r-š-t-i /aršti-/, “spear”) (attested in 𐎢𐎺𐎠𐎼𐏁𐎫𐎡𐎣 (u-v-a-r-š-t-i-k /uvārštika-/, “good spearman”)). Related to Avestan 𐬀𐬭𐬱𐬙𐬌 (aršti, “spear, lance”), Sanskrit ऋष्टि (ṛṣṭí, “spear, lance”) and more distantly to Persian خشت (xešt, “javelin, dart, spear”), Northern Kurdish ئەرش (erş, “spear, lance”), ھەش (heş, “javelin”). Also from Iranian: Avar гӏащтӏи (ʻašštʼi).
