Ultimately from German Spatz (sparrow), from Old High German sparo (sparrow), from Proto-Germanic *sparwô (sparrow), + -ek. Cognate with Russian шпак (špak, starling), Ukrainian шпак (špak), Belarusian шпак (špak), Polish szpak (starling).
