From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ṭṣáysat, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćšáysat, from Proto-Indo-European *tḱéy-s-n̥t, from *tḱey- (“to cultivate, settle, live”). Cognate with Latin sīrīs.
