Etymology

Back-formation from the plural pebyll, from Middle Welsh pebyll sg, from Proto-Brythonic *pėbɨll, from Vulgar Latin păpiliō, from Latin pāpiliō. Cognate with Old Irish pupall (whence Irish puball, Scottish Gaelic pùball).
