ciocan
Romanian
Etymology
Corresponds with many cognates in the Balkan sprachbund, including Bulgarian чук (čuk), чукан (čukan), Serbo-Croatian čekić, Polish czekan, Albanian çekan, Hungarian csákány. Ultimately from Turkish çekiç, from Ottoman Turkish چكیچ (çekiç), from Old Anatolian Turkish çekük, Proto-Turkic *čekük, *čeküč (“hammer”), possibly through an intermediate Proto-Slavic *čekanъ.
