From Old Catalan luyr, from Vulgar Latin *lūcīre (with some conjugations from lūcēscō), from Latin lūcēre, present active infinitive of lūceō, from Proto-Italic *loukēō, from the root of lūx (light) or from Proto-Indo-European *lowk-eyo-, a verb that is derived from *lewk-. Compare Occitan lusir, French luire.
