Borrowed from French faisan, possibly crossed with Greek φασιανός (fasianós). Ultimately from Latin phasianus, from Ancient Greek φασιανός (phasianós, “bird of the river Φᾶσις (Phâsis)”).
Compare Italian fagiano and Russian фаза́н (fazán).
