Etymology

From Proto-Brythonic *gwɨðbuɨll, from Proto-Celtic *widukʷēslā (literally wood intelligence). By surface analysis, gwŷdd (trees, wood) +‎ pwyll (consideration, reason). Compare Cornish gwydhbol, Breton gwezboell and also Irish ficheall, Scottish Gaelic fidhcheall, Manx feeal.
