From Old Norse úlfaldi, from an early Germanic loan of Latin elephantus (elephant), from Ancient Greek ἐλέφας (eléphas). Cognate with the Gothic 𐌿𐌻𐌱𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌿𐍃 (ulbandus, camel), Old English olfend (also spelled olfenda); Old High German olbento (camel).
