Etymology 1

From a nasalised variant of Arabic الإجّاص (al-ʔijjāṣ), from إجّاص (ʔijjāṣ) with fused definite article اَل (al-). Compare Algerian Arabic لنجاص (lanjāṣ) and Moroccan Arabic لنجاص (langāṣ), نجاص (ngāṣ).
