Etymology

From Late Latin fontāna, from a substantivation of the adjective Latin fontānus, from fons. Possibly developed phonologically in Romanian via assimilation from an earlier form *funtână. Compare Aromanian fãntãnã, and cf. also Sardinian fantana.
