Found in Late Latin. Probably via Greek (compare Ancient Greek πυτίνη (putínē, flask) and βοῦττις (boûttis), ultimately from the imitative Proto-Indo-European *bʰeHw- (to swell, puff). Also see German Bütte, Latin bulla.
