Found in Late Latin. Probably via Greek (compare Ancient Greek πυτίνη (putínē, “flask”) and βοῦττις (boûttis), ultimately from the imitative Proto-Indo-European *bʰeHw- (“to swell, puff”). Also see German Bütte, Latin bulla.
