From Proto-Balto-Slavic *blaidas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰloyd-o-s, from *bʰleyd-. Cognate with Lithuanian blaĩvas (“whitish, blue, sober”), Proto-Germanic *blaitaz, Albanian blehurë.
