Possibly ultimately from Byzantine Greek στέριφος (stériphos). Alternatively, it may be derived from Vulgar Latin *exstirpus or *extirpus. Compare Romanian sterp, Albanian shterp, shterpë, probably from the same source, and Venetian sterpa, Friulian sterpe.
