Etymology

From Vulgar Latin *culmēna, feminine of *culmēnus, from Latin culmus (stalk; straw). Alternatively of Celtic origin, from putative Proto-Celtic *kolmēnā, from *kŏlmos (straw). Compare Portuguese colmeia and Galician colmea.
