Inari Sami[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Originally the name of the lake Inari. According to Rahkonen (2013), through Proto-Samic from an unknown language in the form *Indjäɣ(ə)r.[1] (the latter component possibly ultimately deriving from Proto-Finno-Permic *jäwrä (lake), while the initial component *ind(V)- cannot be traced to any known language). Later, Rahkonen (2021) speculated that the name may be related to an old lake name Indärjärv south of the River Svir.[2]
