Etymology[edit]

First recorded in early 20th century. Cognate with Latvian Aigars. Uncertain origin. Julius Mägiste (1936) suggests Finnish origin, but the name is unknown in Finland. Compare however dialectal Karelian aiga ‎(time); the corresponding Northern Sami word is an element in ancient personal names such as Áigesárri.
