Etymology

From *maka·l- (“scrape, shovel, remove (snow)”) + *-i(x)po(w)- (“snow”) (compare *so·kixpowi (“it snows”)). Literally "it shovels snow", in reference to the animals' habit of using their hooves to dig through snow to find lichens to eat.
