[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *dʰiHkos > Proto-Balto-Slavic *dīkas > Early Slavic *dīkŭ > Late Slavic *dikъ. Cognates with Lithuanian dỹkas (“empty, idle, for free, vacant”), Latvian dīks (“empty, idle, inactive”), Proto-Albanian *dīkā, and possibly Ancient Greek σίκα (síka, “pig”) (Laconian dialect).
