The following need to be checked regarding the provinces:

  • Pesaro e Urbino or Pesaro-Urbino?
  • Are Prato, Rimini, Sondrio (not listed) also provinces?
  • Do the English equivalents of the capitals also used for the names of the provinces (eg, Venice for Venezia)?
  • Verbenia or Verbeno-Cusio-Ossola?
  • Is Biella a province?

Queries re (English) names of provinces:

  • "Aosta" or "Valle d'Aosta"
  • "Forli-Cesena or Forli"?
  • "Massa Carrara", "Massa-Carrara" or "Massa e Carrara"?
  • "Reggio" or "Reggio di Calabria" or "Reggio Calabria"?

Some sources have one, some have another. Please would an Italian speaker confirm which are correct.

Re:

Province of Aosta and Region of Valle d'Aosta.

In the official site of the Province (they all are in the form htp://www.provincia.name.it) the name is "Forlì-Cesena.

In the official site of the Tuscany Region they write the most "Massa Carrara" and sometimes "Massa - Carrara". So I suppose you can choose one of the two, as you like best.

When we speak we would say "Reggio Calabria" (or "Reggio Emilia" too): it is like this on television. The official name is still "Reggio Calabria", as you can see on http://ww.provincia.reggio-calabria.it .

BTW:

  • Massa and Carrara, or Forlì and Cesena (or Pesaro and Urbino) are couples of different towns, quite "near" each other and none much bigger than the oother: so they didn't want to choose only one of them to become the province capital and they decided for both.
  • Reggio is the name of two different towns one in the Emilia-Romagna and the other in Calabria: so in order to understand of wich one do you speak, you have to say in the name also the region. That would become in italian "Reggio of Calabria" and "Reggio of Emilia". Since it seems too long, we abbreviate when we speak and we cut the "of".

Two little bugs I noticed, perhaps.[edit]

Only two:

Barcellona is not the spanish city of Barcelona, of course (but in italian we write it exactly in this way). There is a little town with this name in Sicily, according to my atlas, but its full name should be "Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto". http://www.comuni-italiani.it/083/005/

[[Livorno|Leghorn]] (I don't know in wich language Livorno would be translated like this: it doesn't seem to be english and of course it is not italian)
