Uncertain about the form[edit]

Kroonen states the three forms of *ūtanē, *utanē, and *uttanē are possible. Citing an overlooked Old Norse variant uttan and Faroese uttan for the geminated form, and also stating that Icelandic utan had to have come from a form with a short vowel. He also claims that only monosyllabic *ūt could have developed the long vowel, that *ūtai would then have to be derived from the former.

I wasn't really sure what to make of it all so I went with the more common form. But I won't mind changing if another form is agreed upon. Anglom (talk) 03:46, 12 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
