Interesting, I thought there were no prefixes in PIE. Is it possible that we're rather dealing a lexical word that was retained only in compound-formations, and reanalyzed as a prefix in the daughters? --Ivan Štambuk (talk) 11:54, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

It's hard to know for sure, but there are certainly a few morphemes that acted primarily or exclusively as prefixes as far as the descendants show. *n̥- is also a special prefixing form of *ne, so the language certainly did at least recognise prefixation as distinct from compounding. —CodeCat 12:27, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

It's just a form used in compounding, not a "real" prefix. Real prefixes can't be used on their own, like *ne. --Ivan Štambuk (talk) 14:53, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
