Etymology

[edit]

From earlier Belgrod, Belegarde, composed of Proto-Slavic *bělъ (white) + *gordъ (town, city). The ending -gard in place of the usual Polish reflex gród is also seen in other Pomeranian placenames (e.g. Nowogard, Stargard).[1] Compare Serbo-Croatian Бео̀град (Beògrad), Russian Бе́лгород (Bélgorod).
