From Proto-Indo-European *bhlǝido-s 'pale', from the Illyrian name Blaedarus, probably cognate to Albanian blehurë from proto-Albanian *blaidura. Compare Old Church Slavonic blědъ(blědŭ, pallid, pale, wan), Old English blāt(pallid, livid), Old High German bleizza(paleness).
