From Proto-Indo-European *bhlǝido-s (pale), from the Illyrian name *Blaedarus, probably cognate to Albanian blehurë, from Proto-Albanian *blaidura. Compare Old Church Slavonic blědъ (blědŭ, pallid, pale, wan), Old English blāt (pallid, livid), Old High German bleizza (paleness).
