Luxembourgish[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
Boîte f (plural Boîtten or Boîten)
- company, business
- letterbox
- Synonym: Bréifkëscht
- (automotive) gearbox
Usage notes[edit]
- The official LOD now prescribes the spelling Boîtten for the plural because the vowel is short (thus analogously to Site > Sitten). However, this is unintuitive here because the digraph oî is specifically French and cannot be confused with a long vowel. Accordingly, Boîten is still widely found in otherwise well edited texts.
