Luxembourgish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from French boîte.

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

Boîte f (plural Boîtten or Boîten)

  1. company, business
    Synonyms: Betrib, Firma
  2. letterbox
    Synonym: Bréifkëscht
  3. (automotive) gearbox

Usage notes[edit]

  • The official LOD now prescribes the spelling Boîtten for the plural because the vowel is short (thus analogously to Site > Sitten). However, this is unintuitive here because the digraph is specifically French and cannot be confused with a long vowel. Accordingly, Boîten is still widely found in otherwise well edited texts.
