Borrowed from Irish Bréanainn (via Latin Brendanus), from Old Irish Brénainn, from Old Welsh breenhin (prince, king), ultimately from Proto-Celtic *brigantīnos ((someone) pre-eminent, outstanding), a diminutive of *brigantī (high, exalted).
