/a/ and /ə/

[edit]

As I have been fixing the transliteration of Pashto lemmas to match the Wiktionary:Pashto transliteration, I have noticed an issue. Pashto distinguishes between two vowel phonemes /a/ and /ə/. Sources like An Etymological Vocabulary of Pashto by Georg Morgenstierne, 1927 clearly distinguish between /a/ and /ə/. However here on Wiktionary I have noticed often what in IPA is [ə] is often transliterated as /a/. Morgenstierne's source is helpful, but the number of words in it limited. Other older dictionaries have many more words, but the transliteration is often not clear. Also, perhaps there are dialectal differences as well. ElkandAcquerne (talk) 20:09, 11 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
