Alright, I made a bit of a mess, but I hope it can all be remediated. I understand that Wikipedia isn't an acceptable reference to put for wiktionary entries, but not explicitly citing a reference for basic vocabulary (like days of the week) seems to be acceptable.

From now onwards I will consult https://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B4%AC%E0%B5%81%E0%B4%A7%E0%B5%BB_(%E0%B4%A6%E0%B4%BF%E0%B4%B5%E0%B4%B8%E0%B4%82) for the days of the week in Malayalam and their etymologies.

Regarding the short and long words for days of the week

[edit]

"Calque of English Sunday, from ഞായര്‍ (ñāyar‍, “sun”) +‎ ആഴ്ച (āḻca, “week”)"

This is what we read on the page for Sunday/ഞായറാഴ്ച . This seems legitimate, but I'm not sure.

It begs the question, when and why did the Malayalam words for the 7 days of the week (which obviously existed in the old calendar) take on the -ആഴ്ച suffix?

If anyone can provide a reference for an answer to this question, I'll gladly link it to the etymology of each long word.
