English citations of GR

  • 2002, Jacque Hall, The Four from California: Our Hearts Were Young and Our Hair Was Gray[1]:
Outside the store was a mailbox, or “post box” as the English say. It was made of iron, painted bright red, and had the letter G R on it. I stopped and pointed this out. “This mailbox is so old. G R means George Rex, or King George I. This box was installed in this village over 250 years ago when the first George was king.”
2010 July, Patty Old West, Once Met, Never Forgotten: Remembering Ken Old, a Man of Integrity[2], page 143:
The common red mail boxes are embossed with the monarch’s initial and “R” for Regina (Queen) or Rex (King). The ones Ken has located are VR (Queen Victoria), ER (King Edward VI), GR (King George V), GVIR (King George VI), EVIIR (King Edward VII) and EIIR (Queen Elizabeth II). Still to find is Edward VIII.
2012, L. Kincavel, Out of the Window: Collected Short Stories[3], page 57:
At the end of the road was a post box, not the ordinary round red sort, but a more ornate green one, with eight sides and a top like a pagoda. I knew that on the front, instead of the more usual GR, or the newer ER, there would be an intertwined VR. The green post box dated from Queen Victoria’s reign.
    2015, Maurice Curtis, Rathgar: A History[4]:
And just around the corner from the end of Frankfort Avenue, outside Fothergills, there is a postbox with GR inscribed. These old postboxes add to the character of Rathgar. The symbols of the postal service in the form of the crown and the royal insignia take their place alongside the signs of Irish independence: P 7 T and An Post.
2017 November 7, Nicholas Blincoe, Bethlehem: Biography of a Town[5]:
The British ruled Palestine between 1917 and 1948. There are many reminders of their stay. The Bethlehem Arab Orthodox Club has a Scout troop with a pipe band. It is quite a sight at Christmas to see Palestinian pipers March into Manger Square. Outside the post office in Beit Jala is an English postbox with the initials GR, George Rex, standing proud of the cast metal.
