  Outside the store was a mailbox, or “post box” as the English say. It was made of iron, painted bright red, and had the letter G R on it. I stopped and pointed this out. “This mailbox is so old. G R means George Rex, or King George I. This box was installed in this village over 250 years ago when the first George was king.”

Outside the post office in Beit Jala is an English postbox with the initials GR, George Rex, standing proud of the cast metal.
