    Most Native American whalemen died at sea or from illness or old age in the land of their birth. Only a few never returned because they chose the life of a beachcomber instead. Usually escaped convicts or sailors, who through desertion, shipwreck, or other happenstance found themselves captives or guests of a native community, beachcombers had a bad reputation.
