    • 1915, Eggs and the Intensive World, page 766:
I will describe the English, with which you appear unacquainted. It is a small active bird carrying, for its size, a wonderful amount of meat on the breast. The body colour is a pretty silver-grey very evenly barred. The neck kackle is white and, in a good bird, is very large, falling well over the shoulders.
    • 1922, Camille Mallarmé, The House of the Enemy, page 214:
In the undergrowth, so high that the olive-trees seemed to open out their branches like kackles without stems, the young mother sang to lull her infant to sleep.
