  • 1936, Het Boek, volume 23:
    page 51: [] gewone r, die men de r longa of recta noemt. In het Nederlandsche schrift wordt de r rotunda gewoonlijk gebruikt na een letter, die bij de middeleeuwsche schrijvers een ronding kreeg aan den rechterkant, zooals de b, d, h, o, p, v en y (met de d wordt natuurlijk niet die bedoeld mit staanden stok, maar met naar links overslaanden stok).

    Straight r is as a rule Praescissus i style in both Italia and Iberian Textualis (15) It is remarkable, then, that some Formata hands in luxury manuscripts of the end of the Middle Ages have flat endings at the baseline in a broad range of letters, but not at that of r (pl. 75). r longa (i.e exteding below the baseline) disappeared almost entirely. The use of round r followed general late medieval practice and it is seldom found at the beginning of words.
