English citations of santol

  • 1918, Arthur George Perkin, Arthur Ernest Everest, The Natural Organic Colouring Matters (Monographs on Industrial Chemistry), London: Longmans, Green and Co., page 589:
By the action of hydriodic acid santal is converted into santol, probably C15H10O6, which consists of small colourless flat needles, melting-point 270–273°. [] If the acid mixture is boiled, these become colourless, apparently with regeneration of santol, for when collected and washed, the product can again be made to produce the same changes. Santol thus appears to contain a lactone group.
  • 1918, Pauline O'Neill, Arthur George Perkin, “XVI.—The Colouring Matters of Camwood, Barwood, and Sanderswood”, in Journal of the Chemical Society, Transactions, volume 113, →DOI, page 137:
This new compound, for which the name santol is proposed, would appear to possess the formula C15H10O6, and this it is hoped to confirm at a later period. [] If the acid mixture is boiled, these become colourless, apparently with regeneration of santol, for when collected and washed, the product can again be made to produce the same changes. Santol thus appears to contain a lactone group.
