The large empty spaces where bombing debris had been removed and the Berlin Wall are not easily forgotten, one the consequence of the hot, and the other of the cold war. That scabrous wall, eventually to be demolished, was repugnant in its division of a modern city, and its typified conflict between the free and communist worlds.
