Sgraffito Sgraffiato. Scratched decoration especially when the scratched line or area reveals a different colour. The word comes from the Italian ‘graffiare’ to scratch and the adjective ‘graffiato’ is sometimes used in English for textured areas. Sgraffito refers to decoration which is in scratched lines and sgraffiato to decoration using areas which have been scratched. By general use however sgraffito embraces all types of scratched decoration including textured areas.
