[edit]From Proto-Nuristani *gawíša, *gawíši, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gawHíšHs (“desire for cows”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷow-h₁éysh₂-s, from *gʷow- (“cow”) + *h₁eysh₂- (“to propel, strengthen”). Cognate with Prasuni gíṣ, givë́ṣ, Ashkun gëvī́ṣ, Waigali geṣ, Vedic Sanskrit गविष् (gavíṣ), गविष (gaviṣá).
