[edit]From Middle High German *gebse, *gebze, from Old High German gebiza, gebita (“dish, bowl, basin, vessel”), probably from Late Latin gabata (“deep dish, platter”). Cognate with Bavarian Gebsa (“bowl, basin, vessel”).
