Etymology

From Middle High German *geverde, northern variant of geverte (way, ride, walk, behaviour), from Old High German *giferdi, *giferti (attested as giverda, giverte), from faran, whence Luxembourgish fueren. The modern sense after cognate German Gefährt, itself after Middle Low German gevērde.
