Etymology

[edit]

Apparently a wordplay calque of German Walddeutsche (Forest Germans). The Polish word Niemcy (Germans) comes from a word meaning "mute ones; ones who cannot speak (a Slavic language)", so in calquing the German word Walddeutsche (Forest Germans), the Poles used głuchy (deaf) rather than głusz (wood) to create a compound meaning "deaf-mutes".
